The Famously Bespectacled Throughout History: A New Installment

We’ve decided that JWG needs to pay homage to those jerks who came before us, who paved the way, who also had poor eyesight.

You might have realized by now that there is a correlation between people who wear glasses and people who are jerks.

Today’s historic JWG was selected in honor of the WINCE event Abby and I are hosting tonight at Real Art Ways.  The series offers a public forum for you to air your adolescent humiliations. The theme of tonight’s event is “Liar, Liar.”  More information for those brave-hearted jerks among you, here.

Dear readers, allow me to present Stephen Glass.

No one with that big a smile could be up to any good.

No one with that big a smile could be up to any good.

This jerk was the wunderkind of DC journalism in the mid-’90s.  He was an associate editor at the New Republic.  He wrote for Mother Jones, Harper’s, Rolling Stone, George, the New York Times Magazine.  And he was twenty-five.  (Not that we’re jealous or anything.)

Trouble was, he fabricated facts for his articles.  A lot of them.

You can read about his lies, here.

You can read his lying articles, indexed here.  (Added bonus, take a look at the website he fabricated to support his article “Hack Heaven.”)

We look forward to continuing this series on the great jerks with glasses throughout history.  It’s important to know from whence you came.  Roots, people.
